When I Grow Up
Ask a five-year-old what they want to be when they grow up and you'll get astronaut, or firefighter, or professional dinosaur trainer.
Then they grow up, get a job, and learn to talk like this.
If you run a business and you've ever watched a simple thing be hidden inside a complicated sentence, this one's for you.
- 01The Nap: I've circled back on the nap initiative and I'm not aligned. Help me understand why this is happening to me specifically.
- 02The Broccoli: I hear you that broccoli is on the roadmap. I'm going to push back. This wasn't in scope when we kicked off dinner, I don't have the bandwidth to onboard a new food at this time, and frankly I have concerns about the texture that I've raised before and do not feel were heard.
- 03The Sibling: I want to flag a resourcing conflict. She's in my room, which is my dedicated workspace, and I'd like to escalate.
- 04The Shoes: Let's take the shoes offline. I'm not saying no to shoes. I'm saying not these shoes, not now, and not on the left foot.
- 05The Bath: Per my last three screams, I do not want the bath. I feel we keep revisiting this and I'd like it added to the record.
- 06The Bedtime: I want to make sure we're aligned on bedtime. My understanding was that bedtime was a conversation, not a decision. I've since learned it was presented as a decision, which I was not looped in on, and I'd like to put a pin in the whole thing until we can align as a household. Also I need water. Also I'm not tired. Also there is a shadow.
- 07The Sharing: I'm open to feedback on sharing. I'm not going to act on it, but I'm open to it.
- 08The Wrong Cup: This is the wrong cup. I understand it is the same cup as yesterday. Yesterday was a different fiscal environment.
- 09The Store: I'd like to lie down here, in aisle six, and revisit our priorities as a family, loudly.
- 10The Coat: The coat is above my pay grade. You put on the coat.
- 11The Banana: I asked for the banana. You opened the banana. We are now in an unrecoverable situation and I'll need you to source a new, unopened banana that is somehow also this one.
- 12The Playdate: Let's not boil the ocean. I liked him for one hour. I'm not prepared to commit to a friendship roadmap.
- 13The Potty: I'm being intentional about the potty. I hear the feedback that the potty is right there. I've done a full landscape review and I've decided to keep my current solution, which is to wait until you've just changed me, tell no one, and let the market discover the problem organically.
- 14The Haircut: It is what it is. I have given up on the haircut and I'd like everyone to see that as maturity.
- 15"I don't want to.": The whole business plan. Two years old, three words, and everyone in the room knows exactly where they stand. We spend the next twenty years unlearning it.
Every one of these is funny for the same reason. Somebody wants something simple, and buries it so nobody can pin them to it.
We don't grow out of it. We just get better at it, until we can't quite say where we are or what to do next.
The Freedom Gambit is where you find the plain version again. Where you actually stand right now, and what comes next.
No jargon. No hiding.
